We want you at Homecoming/Family Weekend '03, October 24-26Homecoming Tailgate Highlights Jam-Packed Weekend President Karen Hitchcock will lead this year’s Homecoming/Family Weekend tailgate party, prior to the UAlbany football game vs. Stony Brook, October 25. Alumni are invited to bring their chairs, coolers and grills and join the fun. New events this year include the Alumni Breakfast, Legacy Reception and Jazz Cabaret. New Administration Building Underway Construction has begun on a new Administration Building at UAlbany. The three-story, 47,000 square-foot building will house Admissions, Visitors Services and some Administration. It will provide a central, welcoming focal point for uptown campus visitors and prospective students. It will be located off Collins Circle, near the main academic podium and the Fine Arts building. Designed by Gwathmey, Siegel and Associates of New York City, it will be made of 1-foot-wide mirrored glass panels and is scheduled for completion in 2005-06.

Campaign Update The Campaign for Albany has received two new, major gifts for the Life Sciences Research Initiative: a pledge of $50,000 from Stewart’s Shops and an anonymous donation of $1,000,000! The President’s Regional Campaign Tour continues next month with two events in the California Bay Area. An alumni reception will be held November 5 in conjunction with the Semiconductor Association event in San Jose, and another outing is planned for San Francisco November 6. Details.

UAlbany MagazineUAlbany Magazine Online The fall 2003 issue of UAlbany Magazine is now online. This issue is full of interesting news and features about UAlbany alumni, students, professors and initiatives. Among the highlights are an article about UAlbany's Lithgow murals, the University's new logo featuring a modern Minerva, the 25th anniversary of campus radio station WCDB and an update on the Campaign for Albany. Details.

Report Finds Underqualified Teachers More Likely to Work in Schools with Poor or Low-Performing Students A new study by UAlbany's Education Finance Research Consortium examines how teacher qualifications are distributed across New York public schools. In "Understanding Teacher Labor Markets: Implications for Equity," UAlbany professors Hamp Lankford and Jim Wyckoff; Don Boyd, deputy director of UAlbany's Center for Policy Research; and Susanna Loeb, assistant professor at Stanford University, examine the distribution of teacher attributes in New York and identify characteristics of teacher "sorting" that create an uneven distribution of teacher qualifications across the state's labor markets. Gen*NY*Sis Center Adds to Research Team The UAlbany Gen*NY*Sis Center for Excellence in Cancer Genomics, a comprehensive, state-of-the-art research facility operated by the University's Center for Functional Genomics, has announced the appointment of three scientists to its cancer biology research team. The researchers will report to GCECG director and UAlbany professor Paulette McCormick, Ph.D. and are faculty members in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the University's School of Public Health. "These young scientists are emerging leaders in some of the newest and most exciting areas of cancer and biological research," McCormick said. Details.

Congress To Campus Program Rockefeller College will host former U.S. Congressional members Hon. Scott Klug and Hon. Andrew Jacobs Oct. 29 to speak with students and the community on the importance of public service and democracy. Details

Casey Foundation.School of Social Welfare Hosts National Symposium More than 300 people attended a groundbreaking, three-day symposium hosted by UAlbany’s School of Social Welfare in September. “Building Communities for 21st Century Child Welfare,” was the first national symposium to bring together families, community leaders and practitioners from agencies traditionally entrusted with securing safe environments for children. Experts from a range of disciplines, some of them UAlbany alumni, presented information on current policy trends and contemporary research as well as information on successful community collaborations from across the country and internationally.

Justeson Named Guggenheim Fellow UAlbany linguistic anthropology professor John Justeson was named a Guggenheim fellow for 2003. He is one of 184 scholars, scientists and artists chosen from more than 3,200 candidates in North America. Justeson will use the $35,000 award to research and co-author a book on the decipherment of the hieroglyphic writing of the epi-Olmec, an ancient civilization that inhabited the Gulf Coast of southern Mexico from 300 B.C. to A.D. 550.

International Organizations Recognize UAlbany Leadership in Information Science Professor Philip Eppard of the School of Information Science and Policy was one of three conveners of the first International Conference on the History of Records and Archives at the University of Toronto, October 2-4. An international selection of more than forty scholars and practicing professionals presented papers and discussed recent works, theoretical perspectives and needs for research in the area of the history of records, record-keeping and archives. Athletics Hall of Fame Welcomes New Members Four former athletes and a legendary coach were inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame October 4. The new inductees included Richard "Doc" Sauers, head men's basketball coach from 1955-97, one of the winningest coaches in the history of college basketball. Also inducted were cross country and track standout Scott Carroll '93, All-American volleyball player Patty Munhall-Blacklock '87, wrestler Chris Tironi '89 and football player Scott Turrin '94. Technology PlaysTechnology Plays Premiere You’re invited to log on at the world premiere of “The Technology Plays” – a series of six interactive plays designed to explore the relationship between humans and technology. Audience members experience each play by individually interacting with a computer in a specially designed set. Lawyer Alumni Networking Event - Homecoming Weekend Rockefeller College and the UAlbany Lawyers Association are hosting an alumni career panel for students interested in various careers in the legal profession October 24, the first day of Homecoming Weekend. “Democracy in Iraq” Discussion Kicks Off Fall Policy Series The free Tuesday Public Policy Luncheon Series offered by the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs kicked off the fall series September 30 with a talk by Professor Michele Angrist, Union College, entitled "Democracy in Iraq: Do-able? Desirable?" The Policy Series focuses on current issues and events and draws upon the expertise of legislators, policy-makers, analysts, or other experts. Big WheelsCheck Out Art & Culture Talks ACT (Art & Culture Talks) is a University Art Museum program that brings together artists, critics, writers and scholars to address key issues in contemporary art and culture. ACT strives to bring Capital Region residents into closer engagement with each other and with the important cultural issues of our time. Two upcoming programs are “My Art Practice and Welcome To It: Tradition, Family and Peanut Butter” by performance artist William Pope.L, Oct. 20 and “A Moving Picture Show” by artist Allen Yates MFA ’99, Oct. 30.
