Two New Exhibitions to Open at University Art Museum
Julie Heffernan: Everything That Rises features paintings by contemporary artist Julie Heffernan, whose work combines traditional motifs with a range of art historical references including Flemish landscapes, 17th-century portraiture and Rococo interiors. Flicker features five contemporary artists whose work references the ephemeral and contradictory impulses of the Baroque Era. The exhibitions are on view Aug. 30-Nov. 12. University Team Visits China
A UAlbany team led by President Hall, deans and other faculty traveled to China in July to discuss academic and research collaborations. They were accompanied by a State University of New York group to discuss program collaborations at the new Xianlin University Town in Nanjing. Hosts were Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province, and East China Normal University and Fudan University in Shanghai. Read the China Journal >>
$300,000 Gift Creates Scholarships for Visually Impaired and Disabled Students
A $300,000 gift from retired schoolteacher Goldie Brenner Swartz '51, and her husband, Howard Swartz, of Longboat Key, Fla., will provide financial support, tuition, room and board for students with visual impairments or disabilities. Full story >>
UAlbany Adds Journalism Major
The University has added a major in journalism to the 54 degree programs in its undergraduate fields of study. The program, housed in the English department in the College of Arts and Sciences, expects to enroll 30 journalism majors in Fall 2006. Full story >>

School of Social Welfare 40th Anniversary Celebration Set
The School of Social Welfare invites alumni to celebrate its 40th anniversary with an afternoon of socializing Oct. 20, 4-6 p.m., in Milne 200 on the Downtown Campus. Invitees include alumni, representatives of community agencies and organizations, corporate and foundation sponsors, government officials and representatives, friends, current and former faculty and staff. School of Business Professor Chairs Inaugural Conference on Cyber Security
In June, Sanjay Goel, School of Business assistant professor and director of research for the New York State Center for Information Forensics and Assurance, co-chaired the first annual Symposium on Information Assurance, the newly implemented academic track of the New York State Cyber Security Conference. The center is a partnership of UAlbany, the New York State Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination, and the New York State Police.
UAlbany’s Africana Studies Graduate Program Second in the Nation
UAlbany’s Africana Studies undergraduate and graduate programs both ranked in the top 10 in the nation according to Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine. The graduate program ranked second, behind Columbia University, for the second consecutive year, and the undergraduate program ranking moved from 10th to sixth. Full story >>
Faculty and Students Visit Rwanda For Study and Service Tour
UAlbany Social Welfare and Political Science students accompanied Social Welfare professors Barbara Rio and Starr Wood to Rwanda this July for a service learning/study tour. The students participated in cross-cultural dialogues with genocide survivors attending the local university; assisted in building a security wall around a cultural and spiritual center in the capital city of Kigali; and participated in activities with children orphaned by HIV, poverty and the 1994 genocide that killed one million people. Professor Receives Literacy Grant
Donna Scanlon, a professor in the reading department and associate director of the Child Research and Study Center, and her School of Education colleagues Lynn Gelzheiser, Frank Vellutino, and Virginia Goatley have received a three-year, $1.44 million grant from the Institute of Education Science of the U.S. Department of Education for a project that will involve collaboration with educators at a variety of colleges and universities to develop and evaluate materials to be used in pre-service language arts methods classes. Professor Selected as Fulbright Senior Specialist and Consultant in Uruguay
Gilbert Valverde, associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Policy Studies, has been selected as a Fulbright Senior Specialist for a five-year period. The program’s intent is to foster international scholarly exchanges by matching senior expertise to requests for such expertise made to the local Fulbright committees of participating countries. Students and Faculty from Hallym University Visit the School of Social Welfare
For the past nine years, the School of Social Welfare (SSW) has hosted students and faculty from Hallym University in Seoul, Korea, to introduce them to American culture and its social welfare system. This July, Hallym University visitors heard presentations by SSW faculty and visited health and social welfare agencies in the Capital District to learn about our region's community services. SSW has a formal sister-university agreement with Hallym University.

Great Danes Home Opener Against Fordham

The fourth annual Metro NY Great Danes Scholarship Golf Classic returns to the Green Course of historic Bethpage State Park Monday, Sept. 25. The UAlbany Alumni Association offers GMAT, GRE and LSAT test-prep courses to help alumni and students prepare for graduate/law school admission tests.
