Exploring architecture's spatial circumstances

On January 24, two exhibits open at The University Art Museum and are part of Architecture at Albany, the year long exploration of the built environment at the University at Albany and its surrounding community.

The Space Between Us features the work of nine contemporary artists, Jesse Bercowetz and Matt Bua, Dawn Clements, Richard Garrison, Mark Greenwold, Oliver Michaels, Adia Millett, Fabien Rigobert, and Mary Temple who all share an affinity for overlooked spaces (real or imagined). Their various work explores a range of spatial circumstances inspired by familiar interiors and the surrounding architecture. There are works in video, painting, drawing and installation.

In the West Gallery of the museum the exhibit Openings and Passageways: Selected Works from the University at Albany Collections features 17 works on paper, in which common architectural elements such as doors, windows or passageways serve as the emotional entry points of a given pictorial space; curated by Julie Maliszewski, Milton and Sally Avery Foundation Student Intern.

The exhibits run through April 9, 2006. Artists' reception: January 24, 2006, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
