Maia Boswell is an Assistant Professor in Women's Studies. Prior to joining the Women's Studies Department in the Fall of 1999, she received her Ph.D. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; her focus there was on race and gender theory, cultural studies, and 19th Century British literature. She studied English, Anthropology, and feminist theory as an undergraduate at the University of the South, Sewanee, TN, receiving her B.A. in 1986. During her time at UNC, she helped develop and implement curriculum for a new course in Social Theory and Cultural Diversity, and taught sections of this course through the Department of International Studies. She currently teaches courses having to do with feminist pedagogy, feminist theory, theories and studies in classism, racism, sexism, heterosexism, and other systemic frameworks of oppression. In addition, she has taught a series of coures on Environmental Racism, Ecofeminisms, and related subjects. Professor Boswell's research on Environmental Issues and Feminisms have helped to shape her work outside of the university community. As a founding member of the Coalition on Women and the Environment, she has helped launch three symposia, including a town hall Symposium on Environmental Impacts of Population and Resource Consumption in 2002.

Professor Boswell's research focuses on environmental justice issues, including environmental racism, ecofeminisms, cultural constructions of environmental dilemmas, and global issues. Her research also involves analyses of social and cultural theory, feminist rhetorical criticism, and feminist pedagogy.
