Message from the President of the Board of Directors

America’s colleges and universities, both public and private, have depended, in great measure, on private support to sustain and enhance their educational mission. One of the notable characteristics of the nation’s great institutions of higher learning is the presence of a substantial endowment - resources committed to the future of the institution. This is a primary goal for UAlbany.

The University at Albany Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the University at Albany and, as such, it plays a central role in fundraising, asset management, and the stewardship activities associated with these responsibilities. Gifts and grants from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations provide vital resources necessary to accomplish the University’s educational, research and public service mission. The Foundation serves as the depository and fiduciary for these funds.

Founded in 1967 to attract and manage private support, the Foundation has increased its scope of activities to parallel the University's development. The Foundation has a growing real estate portfolio designed to complement existing state facilities. The East Campus in Rensselaer is the largest, a complex of office buildings and laboratories with a Biotechnology focus. It is the site of the new $46 million Gen*NY*sis Center for Cancer Genomics.

The Foundation's other properties include the Management Service Building at 2 University Place, which houses numerous University operational offices and departments; a historic brownstone at 423 State Street which serves as a conference facilty; and the President's official residence at 5 Englewood Place. Additionally, the Foundation owns a large tract in Bolton Landing within the Adirondack Park, which is available to the Biology Department's Program in Biodiversity for field research.

The Foundation is governed by a 57-member Board of Directors composed of alumni, community, and university representatives from the professions, business and industry, academia and government. The functional activities of the corporation are undertaken by several committees of the Board with programming initiatives developed and implemented by Board-endorsed councils.

Foundation Operations are managed by an Executive Director and implemented by Foundation staff. We invite you to browse our website and to join with us in this noble cause.
