Fall Workshops and Events for UAlbany Faculty

Who are my students, and why are they like that?

Friday, September 7, 2007 12:00 Noon – 1:30 PM

Campus Center 375

Brown Bag Format: Participants are invited to pick up a sandwich in the Food Court and join in this discussion, which will be facilitated by ITLAL.

Sometimes what your students do will surprise you. Sometimes it shouldn’t. This event is a chance for you to analyze with your colleagues what is happening in your classrooms, and to reflect upon student motivation and behavior. The facilitators will also provide some helpful background material on student development.

When To Say Yes; How To Say No

Friday, October 5, 2007 12:00 Noon – 1:30 PM

Terrace Lounge in the Campus Center

Brown Bag Format: Participants are invited to pick up a sandwich in the Food Court and join in this discussion, which will be facilitated by ITLAL.

You already know that not all work is of equal value. Are you finding yourself on every departmental committee? Did you just agree to do another independent study with a wayward student? In this session we ask participants to reflect on their priorities for research, teaching, and service, and then to develop strategies or learn techniques for protecting the time necessary to accomplish those goals that will lead most directly to success.

Evaluation of Your Teaching: Take charge of it…before it takes charge of you

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 3:00 – 4:30 PM

Assembly Hall, Campus Center 2nd Floor

Workshop Format: Among teaching, research, and service, teaching is by far the dimension of our professional work that is hardest to evaluate and document effectively. As a result, it’s tempting to wait and let the evaluation process find you, rather than seize control of your own destiny. In this workshop for faculty, department chairs, and other administrators with a role in faculty evaluation, we will examine together some of the sensitive issues related to the process, and take a close look at best practices. Areas of discussion will be: characterizing your effectiveness as a teacher; developing an evaluation plan; documenting your teaching effectiveness; and developing a reflective teaching portfolio.
