Effective classroom management requires a certain amount of self-knowledge: what are your own tolerances? what are your own values? Some instructors find satisfaction in a free, somewhat chaotic environment, in which students are given considerable control and responsibility for what happens in the course. In this model the instructor creates a clear framework, communicating expectations for what the students need to do, how they will be evaluated, deadlines, and what resources are available, but then steps aside and lets the students work. The instructor in this model places the responsibility on students to figure out how best to accomplish the given objectives, according to clear standards and within a time frame. Other instructors will gravitate toward a more directed approach with an emphasis on procedure, greater control of class meetings, tighter scheduling, and greater restriction on student behavior. As an instructor you will need to experiment with elements of both polar approaches until you discover your own best zone. An ideal approach seeks to structure a learning environment that combines some level of student autonomy with clear accountability. Click for less
