Parents
Supporting Your Student
As a parent or other caregiver you are a very valuable resource and support system. Research suggests when students are close to their parents/guardians it also follows that there is more open communication. This communication can assist in developing self-confidence, an increased sense of personal autonomy, career and relationship choices that are more successful, and overall better adjustment to college life.
The knowledge you have of your child is important because you are more to notice changes first. The changes may be in their mood or behavior. Some of these changes may be early signs of emotional or psychological distress. Changes after a traumatic situation can vary and you may notice:
- Academic Performance
- Grades, motivation, concentration, or class attendance.
- Behavior
- Low Energy, personal hygiene, speech, mood, sleep or appetite.
- Relationship patterns
- Interaction with loved ones shifts, more conflict in close relationships, social isolation.
- Overall Mood/Emotions
- Depression or references to suicide, statements about hopelessness or helplessness, or pessimism about the future.
