What to do if you have been sexually assaulted or raped...
For all emergency safety concerns, call 911
Access to timely information is important. It is helpful to be informed, know more about key campus and community resources, and to prioritize the next steps.
Remember, the assault was NOT your fault. There are people at the University and in Albany who will believe you and support you as you decide what to do.

You can request a Medical Advocate to meet you at the hospital Medical Advocate: can meet you at the hospital and are committed to being with you during your time at the hospital. They offer support, assistance and information about choices and how to navigate your medical care. Call Crime Victims Sexual Violence Center 24/7 hotline at 447-7716. Medical Care will provide you with the following options:
- STI testing and medication
- Emergency contraception
- “Rape Kit” - collection of evidence up to 5 days after incident
- HIV Prophylaxis medication
- Tell someone who can provide immediate support/information
- Friend

In supporting your efforts to take control about the options available our University has adopted a policy where your confidentiality can be preserved.
- If you tell someone and do not want anything done or anyone else to know then you have the right to say you do not want your name revealed to any other person or office on campus.
- You can retain your anonymity.
- You always have the option to change your mind about getting other services or letting others know.
- The only time your name could be released without your consent is in a situation where you and others are in imminent danger and in need of immediate protection.
Emergency contraception, or emergency birth control, is used to help keep a woman from getting pregnant.
Common Reasons for use of Emergency contraception after a sexual assault:
- To protect and provide added assurance against potential unwanted pregnancy
- Offered as standard practice at all hospitals and as part what is provided during a “rape kit”
- Whether you decide to have a “rape kit” done or not emergency contraception can be provided at area hospitals and is also available at the University Health Center
- Birth control was not used
- You were forced to have sex
- He didn’t pull out in time
- You missed two or more birth control pills in a row
- You were late getting your shot
