OFF-CAMPUS SAFETY Initiatives

  • Committee on Community and University Relations is a collaboration of city, university and other local colleges, tavern owners and neighborhood associations who work to make life safer off campus for college students and local residents, to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods off campus where college students reside, and to develop alcohol and other drug prevention and education programs.   • Midtown Neighborhood Watch - a partnership between UPD, the Albany Police Department, the College of St. Rose Safety/Security and the Pine Hills and Beverwyck Neighborhood Associations which provides patrols that serve as “eyes and ears” for APD as well as disseminate safety information and tips in the midtown area.

  • Operation Safe Corridor – Cooperative effort of UPD, Albany Police Department and College of St. Rose Safety/Security to designate safer routes in the Pine Hills area. Also collaborates with local businesses to provide safe havens for students in need of assistance, conducts security surveys, and includes uniformed details to improve the safety of our students’ while conducting their daily and nightly business.
  • Late night “safety walk & talks” Collaboration of UAlbany, Albany Police Department and College of St. Rose Safety/Security to speak to students and hand out safety tips as well as mention any recent incidents as “teachable moments.”
  • “Door-to-door safety chats” with student tenants on blocks off campus at the beginning of the fall semester and as warranted. A collaboration of UAlbany’s Office of Personal Safety & Off-Campus Affairs, Albany Police Department and College of St. Rose Safety/Security which goes door to door in student neighborhoods to speak about safety and hand out safety information/tips.
  • How Safe Are You door tags (three thousand) with safety tips are distributed door to door right before students return to the local neighborhoods in the fall.
  • Off-Campus Student Survival Guide; How to be Safer and a Better Neighbor in three thousand plastic door hanger bags are distributed at the beginning of the fall semester door to door – printed and disseminated by a collaboration of UAlbany’s Office of Personal Safety & Off-Campus Affairs, CSR Safety/Security, Pine Hills Neighborhood Association and Beverwyck Neighborhood Association to get important safety information to students at the beginning of every fall.

  • Off-Campus Guides for On-Campus Students - Over seven thousand are handed out to on-campus UAlbany students at the beginning of the fall semester to provide them with off-campus safety tips.
  • Annual lighting and safety survey done off campus in the area around Alumni Quad/the College of St. Rose/Albany High School/the La Salle School.
  • The Whistle Watch Safety Program is a safety alert program in cooperation with the Albany and University Police Departments providing free safety whistles to the University and the local Albany community. The College of St. Rose, Albany Medical College, and Albany Medical Center also participate in this program.

    Brochures and whistles are available at the University Police Department 24/7 by speaking to the UPD Dispatcher on duty.
  • Albany Disabled Alert Program – personal safety alarms for UAlbany students, faculty and staff who cannot use a WhistleWatch whistle.
