On Campus Safety
University Police are on duty 24/7/365 and have jurisdiction on the UAlbany Main Campus, Alumni Quad and the Draper Complex. East Greenbush police maintain jurisdiction on the East Campus.
Some important things to know about safety on the UAlbany Campus include:
- The University at Albany is one of the safest campuses in the SUNY system. Federal Law mandates the release of campus crime statistics to the entire campus community each year. Crime statistics are available for three years on the UPD web site at http://police.albany.edu/ASR.pdf.
- Advisory Committee on Campus Security - Faculty, students and staff comprise this group which is committed to addressing issues of personal safety and security.
- A Lighting master Plan” is being implemented to address lighting on campus.
- Lighting surveys take place twice on out three campuses to identify areas that need attention.
- Safety Fairs are held each semester to increase awareness on safety issues.
- UAlbany encourages a student, faculty and staff culture that encourages prevention and reporting. “If you see something, say something”.
- Regular email, poster and flyer campaigns are executed on issues of safety.
- RAD – Rape Aggression Defense courses for women and men.
- Emergency and Blue Light Phone System - over 330 emergency phones on the three campuses connect directly to the University Police.
- Don't Walk Alone Safety Escort Service - volunteer safety escort service which operates Sunday-Thursday nights, 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. except during the summer and during University recesses. For information and to apply call 518-442-5511.
- Park, Walk and Talk – UPD will walk around areas on the three campuses to talk to students about safety issues.
- Students can call UPD for a safety escort if the Don't Walk Alone Safety Escort Service is not in service.
- SUNY NY Alert – emergency messaging system in the event of a campus emergency.
- WhistleWatch personal safety alarm program to alert community residents of a problem occurring in the area. WhistleWatch works by a person blowing his/her whistle to signal trouble.
- The Albany Disabled Alert Program provides free personal attack alarms to those individuals who cannot use a Whistle Watch whistle.
