Octavious Wilder
A GREAT Great Dane
Octavious Wilder is a Senior Communications major from Bronx, NY and plans to pursue a career in public relations and advertising. Octavious has been involved with the University since his sophomore year, through participation in various student groups and Residential Life. Octavious has been a Resident Assistant for 2 years, and has won program of the month and student staff member of the month each year. One program that Octavious has dedicated his time to as a Resident Assistant is the continuous blood drives on Colonial Quad in which he is a recent recipient of the American Red Cross Blood Drive scholarship.
Octavious is a member of the Rho Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This fraternity is the first intercollegiate fraternity established by African Americans founded on December 4, 1906, on the campus of Cornell University. He is currently the Vice-President, Treasurer and programming director for his chapter. Under his leadership, along with his fraternity brothers, Alpha Phi Alpha is a recent recipient of the President’s Undergraduate Leadership Award for the Greek Organization of the Year.
Octavious is a full-time student, while also working full-time as a bank teller, but always finds time to support the University and the Albany Community. His continuous dedication to social action programs on and off campus is impressive. One program that he has conducted is the Ms. Black and Gold Scholarship banquet, where a young lady is awarded a scholarship who best represents herself in various aspects, such as education, and community service. Another program called “Major pain” helps students with undecided majors get on the right track to graduate on time. For the community, he works with GreenTech High school for a MODELS program in which he tutors young boys and plays basketball with them twice a week after school. You can also find Octavious at Mount Calvary Baptist church serving Food to the homeless every other Saturday.
In the summer you might not recognize Octavious and because he takes pride in dressing as the Great Dane and Lil ‘D for all the new incoming freshman and transfer students. This is something that he enjoys very much, from dancing, to playing the drums and making students laugh. If you saw the way he moves in the costume you can be sure it is Octavious. Octavious’s involvement on campus and all that he does beyond clearly makes him a GREAT GREAT DANE!
