About Margaret SheehyPh.D. Ohio State University
In 1999, Dr. Sheehy received her Ph.D in Language, Literacy, and Culture at Ohio State University, where she also taught freshman composition and literature. Prior to that time, she taught in elementary and middle schools in Montana and Wisconsin, in K-12 literacy programs at Montana State University-Billings and University of Montana-Western, and in K-6 programs at the University of Wyoming. Since joining the University at Albany faculty in 2001, Dr. Sheehy has been mainly engaged in the Grades 5-12 Master’s program. She teaches the introductory and practicum courses for grades 5-12 literacy specialists and writing courses in both the B-6 and 5-12 programs. In these courses, Dr. Sheehy brings the newest learning theories to soon-to-be literacy specialists so that, as literacy specialists practicing in schools, they will know how to work with classroom teachers and students across all curricular areas. Specifically, Dr. Sheehy teaches her students to teach reading and writing so that it will enhance content knowledge building, in specific disciplines, through processes of cognitive distribution. Dr. Sheehy also uses the Response to Intervention model in her classes, to prepare literacy specialists to collaborate with classroom teachers on excellent, first-tier classroom instruction and to plan appropriate, excellent second-tier and third tier, Academic Instructional Support (AIS) or one-to-one tutoring for those needing it.
