Cheryl’s research and teaching examine the relationships among responsive teaching, learners, and families toward creating a more just society. In 1996, Cheryl received the Reading Educator of the Year award from the New York State Reading Association for her work with preservice and inservice teachers. Cheryl continues to collaborate with school districts as they redesign their literacy instruction. Cheryl’s research interests also include examining teacher's histories as learners and exploring how teachers become responsive educators.
