Prior to joining the University at Albany faculty, Cheryl Dozier (Ph.D. University at Albany, State University of New York) was a visiting professor at Vassar College where she taught literacy methodology courses and supervised student teachers. Her classroom teaching experiences range from kindergarten through eighth grade in urban and suburban classrooms. Currently, Cheryl teaches ERDG500 Introduction to Literacy Teaching and Learning, B-6, ERDG615 Teaching Writing, B-6, and ERDG620 Capstone Practicum and Seminar, B-6. The capstone course, often referred to as the Reading Department Literacy Lab, is now located at Arbor Hill Elementary School in Albany, NY. As part of this course, graduate students tutor elementary students experiencing literacy difficulties. Cheryl also works with the teachers at Arbor Hill in an ongoing professional development initiative. Cheryl received the 1996 Reading Educator of the Year award from the New York State Reading Association for her work with preservice and inservice teachers. In May 2002, she received a University at Albany School of Education Outstanding Dissertation award. Her research and teaching examine the relationships among responsive teaching and readers and their families toward a more just society. All of the research projects examine the multiple layers of teaching, learning, and context. She has a forthcoming article in the Journal of Literacy Research.
