NON-DEGREE STUDY IN THE READING
DEPARTMENT IS PERMITTED ONLY UNDER THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
- If you graduated with a master's degree from any institution other than UAlbany's Reading Department, you may NOT take core reading courses that lead to literacy specialist certification (e.g., ERDG600, ERDG620; ERDG605, ERDG623). You are free, however, to take ERDG500 or ERDG505 and any other reading course subject to the conditions stated below.
- Applications
for non-degree study in the Department have to be reviewed and approved
by the Department (applicants have to meet the same requirements as
candidates for degree programs (e.g., 3.0 minimum GPA, transcripts,
written responses to Department questions, etc.), except that letters
of reference are recommended but not required. (Students whose application
folders are currently in the Reading Department, and who have not
been denied for admission to a degree program, do not have to submit
new applications).
- Although the
University allows non-degree students to take an unlimited number
of courses, only 12 credit hours can be applied to a Reading MS program
if the student applies for and is accepted into a program. Further,
only courses that fit the course distribution requirements of the
program will be allowed to transfer. The Reading Department will NOT
waive either of these requirements.
- Non-degree
students are accepted into Reading Department courses on a strictly
first-come, first-served, space-available basis. No waiting lists
are maintained for non-degree students, and no guarantees are made
about availability of seats in any course.
- Non-degree
students are not assigned an academic advisor. Almost all information
needed to select appropriate courses is provided on the Reading
Department web site, but questions about course selection or other
academic concerns can be addressed to Linda Papa, who will refer
them to an advisor.
- Non-degree
students are not permitted to take any course for which they do not
have the prerequisite, even if there are seats available.
While
successful completion of courses taken as a non-degree student can be
submitted as evidence of preparation for graduate study when applying
to a degree program, it does not automatically guarantee acceptance into
a degree program. Non-degree students who have taken courses in the Reading
Department compete on the same basis as students from other institutions
for admission to our MS programs.
I HAVE
READ AND AGREE TO THESE CONDITIONS. I UNDERSTAND THAT I WILL NOT RECEIVE
AN AVN# UNLESS THIS SIGNED MEMORANDUM IS ON FILE IN THE READING DEPARTMENT
