If you are a matriculated student in the Literacy 5-12 program, you should download a copy of this program planning sheet, print it out, and keep it updated.

Program Planning Sheet (MS Literacy Specialist 5-12):

Note: be sure to download/print the latest planning sheet, dated 2/9/06

MS Literacy (5-12) Notes

What has remained the same in the 5-12 Literacy program?

--the program still requires 30 credit hours for completion

What has changed in the revised 5-12 Literacy program?

--there are two major groups of courses in the revised program plan:  Core Required Reading (now 21 credit hours) and Electives (now 9 credit hours);

--the Concentration category of courses has been eliminated.  There is no need to designate a Concentration in the revised 5-12 program.

--two of the courses (ERDG 506 and ERDG 616) formerly listed as electives are required in the revised program as Core Required Reading courses.

Which 5-12 Literacy program plan should I follow?

--students entering the 5-12 program from Spring 2006 onwards must follow the revised program plan.

--if you are nearing completion of your 5-12 program, you might want to consider remaining with the program plan you have been following all along. You would still need to designate a concentration area and take 3 courses within the categories of concentrations available.  (See the Reading Department website for the listing of Concentration areas and courses.)

--if you can add ERDG 506 and ERDG 616 to your course work without exceeding 30 credit hours, you may want to consider following the revised 5-12 program. A decision to shift to the revised 5-12 program plan should be discussed with your advisor.
