Uses Appropriate Mechanics in Writing

 

Model, teach and have children practice appropriate mechanics, primarily in the context of authentic writing.

Provide regular opportunities for children to apply their knowledge of writing mechanics in their own work.

  • Provide regular opportunities for children to apply their knowledge of writing mechanics in their own work.
 
  • Provide regular opportunities for children to write (e.g., signing in, writing stories, keeping a journal, making lists, etc.)

 

  • When responding to children’s writing include comments on mechanics (e.g., point out where capital letters or end marks are needed).

 

  • Share children's writing, emphasizing writing mechanics
  • Provide opportunities for publishing children's writing
 
  • Engage children in activities in which they can edit and proofread their own and others' writing (e.g., individual writing conferences, writer's workshop, etc.)
  • When responding to children’s writing include comments on mechanics
  • Share children's writing, emphasizing writing mechanics

  • Provide opportunities for publishing children's writing (e.g., creating newsletters, anthologies, hallway displays, class books, etc.)
