  • Model, teach, and have students practice strategies for understanding literary texts
  • model with children various strategies for understanding literary texts (e.g., hands-on activities prior to, during and/or after reading; picture-reading the text, representing stories visually; making text to self connections)
  • engage children in representing what they are learning  (e.g., conversing, role-playing, using manipulatives, drawing, 'writing,' etc.)
  • model with children and teach various strategies for understanding literary texts (e.g., building and activating prior knowledge; hands-on activities prior to, during and/or after reading; using graphic cues; representing stories visually; making text to self, text to world, and text to text connections)
  • teach literary elements (e.g., character, settings, plot, figurative language, flashback, dialog, etc.)
  • engage children in representing what they are learning  (e.g., conversing, role-playing, using manipulatives, drawing, 'writing,' etc.)

 

 

  • model with children various strategies for understanding literary texts (e.g., building and activating prior knowledge, representing stories graphically; making text to self, text to world, and text to text connections, making use of text structure knowledge)
