Engage children in activities that develop and extend their interests in and understanding of the world.

Model, teach, and have children practice strategies for gaining access to knowledge, and making it their own.

  • Provide frequent opportunities for children to interact directly with the world around them, both inside and outside the home
  • involve children in everyday tasks/experiences in the home /classroom (e,g., laundry, preparing meals, cleaning), and outside the home/classroom (shopping, going on walks, visiting the library, etc.).
 
  • create new experiences in the home/classroom (e.g., bring in sea shells or sand from the ocean, measuring ingredients for cooking)
  • Take frequent walks with children, and explain things you see.
  • Take children on field trips (to farms, post office, fire station, libraries, doctor's office, etc.)
  • In each experience listed above:

--ask and answer questions

--use and explain vocabulary associated with the experience (e.g., detergent, bar codes)

--explain how things work

--make connections to other experiences

 

  • involve children in everyday tasks/experiences in the home /classroom (e,g., laundry, preparing meals, cleaning), and outside the home/classroom (shopping, going on walks, visiting the library, etc.).
 
  • create new experiences in the home/classroom (e.g., bring in sea shells or sand from the ocean, measuring ingredients for cooking)

  • Take children on field trips (museums, planetariums, zoos, businesses, nature centers, plays, concerts, etc)
