CAS
Examinations Overview
CAS students
must take and pass a qualifying examination in order to be eligible for the
60-hr Certificate. This can be done in one of two ways: submitting and passing
a CAS Research Project on a topic of the candidate's choosing, or passing
the Department's Comprehensive Examination. In most cases, CAS students will
submit the Research Project. However, some CAS students may decide that they
wish to keep open their options to pursue doctoral studies either immediately
or at a later point. In these cases, it makes sense to consider the Comprehensive
Examination as the qualifying exam for the CAS program. A CAS candidate who
passes this examination may apply to the PhD program, and continue directly
toward the Specialization Examination and the Dissertation. There would be
no requirement to take the Comprehensive examination again.
The CAS research project counts as
the final examination for the CAS program, and cannot be used to satisfy the
requirements of the Comprehensive Examination.
