Just four years ago, Kristin Cappon was working in the scene shop and helping with set designs as a senior in UAlbany's Theatre Department. Now, Cappon is making her mark in the Big Apple on the stage, TV and film. And, she's just getting started.

Cappon's latest project includes shooting the Web series Sisters Grimm. Earlier this year, the 25-year-old actress headlined the play Sunrise at the Quarry at the Payan Theater of the Roy Arias Theater Center in New York City.

For Cappon, a trip to see A Raisin in the Sun in her youth inspired a dream to become an actress, triggering her involvement in community theater at age 11. When she was considering colleges, Cappon was drawn to UAlbany's Theatre Department.

"I received a very warm welcome there. Since I was from a small town, I didn't want to jump into the big ocean of New York City," said Cappon, who graduated in 2004. "Albany was bigger than Watertown, but not huge, and it also offered cultural opportunities."

At UAlbany, Cappon found that "the theatre department's well-rounded approach prepared me to do a lot of different things. Tech labs were required for the major. Through the labs, we experienced different elements of the same major," she explained.

After graduation, Cappon took her UAlbany support system with her to New York City in pursuit of an acting career. She e-mailed faculty members J. Kevin Doolen and Mark Dalton, and lecturer Eileen Schuyler, posing questions she felt she couldn't ask anyone else.

"What do I do? I'm so lost; there are so many people here! A casting director has called me for a look-and-see. What's that? I don't want to ask and look foolish," she recalled asking her mentors.

She's come a long way since then. Cappon has several commercials to her credit, including one for Target. She has also appeared on the popular television show "Law and Order" and several independent movies.

The stage is still her first love, which prompted Cappon and several actors to establish the non-profit Black Door Theater Company in New York City, where they write and produce original works. But it was UAlbany's strong foundation that laid the groundwork for Cappon's early career success.
