William Kennedy and President Karen R. Hitchcock.UAlbany Acquires Kennedy Papers UAlbany has acquired the papers of Pulitzer-prize winning novelist William Kennedy, a collection comprising some 70 boxes of manuscripts, film scripts and memorabilia. The collection will serve as a resource for scholarly research on Kennedy's literary career, and on the social, political and literary histories of the Capital Region. Details.

Campaign Update Apple Computers has given a $111,000 gift of equipment to the University in support of the new Life Sciences building, which is expected to open next summer. Since the groundbreaking two years ago, the University has received four separate million dollar gifts for the facility, which will enable the University to pioneer cutting-edge research into the causes and cures of disease.

Clash of the Quads '03“Clash of the Quads” Brings Back Memories of “Rivalry” UAlbany's "Clash of the Quads," a two-day competition for freshman where students competed in events ranging from kickball to a tri-cycle race (with a twist), was held Oct. 11-12, on Indian and State Quads on the Uptown Campus. The event was created to revive an old tradition, “Rivalry,” which encouraged school spirit and pride in the University.

Hitchcock.National Leadership Honor Society Establishes Chapter at UAlbany For the first time ever, 42 UAlbany students, faculty and staff were inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership society, October 26. ODK’s board of directors recently voted to establish a chapter at UAlbany. UAlbany becomes the 289th institution to be awarded a charter in the Society’s 90-year history, joining some of the nation’s premier colleges and universities, including the University of Southern California, Purdue, Auburn and Vanderbilt universities.

New Major In Broadcast Meteorology Offered UAlbany's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is offering a new major in broadcast meteorology this semester. The 60-credit interdisciplinary program leads to a bachelor of arts. The major was created for students pursuing a meteorology career in TV or radio broadcasting, rather than the more typical “behind-the-scenes” weather forecasting position. Details.

Lydia DavisWriter Lydia Davis Named MacArthur Fellow Lydia Davis, an acclaimed fiction writer and associate professor/Writer-in-Residence in UAlbany’s English Department, has been named one of 24 new MacArthur Fellows for 2003 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Each fellow receives $500,000 in "no strings attached" support over the next five years. Davis is well known in literary circles for her extremely short and brilliantly inventive short stories. Details.

School of Social Welfare Receives Grants UAlbany’s School of Social Welfare recently was awarded four grants by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services The School received more than $3 million in funding for research in child welfare and family programs and services. The grants will fund three doctoral dissertations, a three-year evaluation of Family Support Programs, a five-year initiative to address Healthy Marriages and Family Formation, and a five-year initiative involving the Recruitment and Retention of child welfare workers.

Arts & Sciences News Theatre Assistant Professor James Farrell's play "Correspondence" has just been selected as a finalist for the Actors Theatre of Louisville 2003 Heideman Award/National Ten-Minute Play Contest. Sociology Professor Marvin Krohn and Kimberly Tobin (Ph.D., Sociology), co-authors of “Gangs & Delinquency in Developmental Perspective,” won the American Society of Criminology 2003 Michael J. Hindelang Award for the most outstanding contribution to research in criminology.

Museum Features Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts Candidates The University Art Museum is featuring the artwork of the UAlbany fall 2003 Master of Fine Arts candidates and Master of Arts candidates. The Museum provides candidates with the opportunity to exhibit a cohesive body of their work in a professional museum setting while offering area viewers an opportunity to see how today’s emerging artists are addressing contemporary issues in the visual arts. The exhibit will be on view Dec. 2-20, with an opening reception Dec. 12. Details.
