David Garland, Ph.D., 10th Annual Michael J. Hindelang Lecturer
The Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center held its 10th Annual Michael J. Hindelang Lecture on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Recital Hall at the uptown campus Performing Arts Center. Currently Professor of Sociology & Law at New York University, Dr. Garland is the acclaimed author of the 2010 book "Peculiar Institution: America's Death Penalty in an Age of Abolition." A discussion was led by criminal justice experts after the lecture, and a reception followed.
Garland earned his Ph.D. in 1984 at the University of Edinburgh and his areas of research interests include the American death penalty; the legal institutions of punishment and control; history and sociology of criminological knowledge; social solidarity; the welfare state; social theory; and the work of Michel Foucault.
