In 1972, the Criminal Justice Research Center was founded by Michael J. Hindelang, a Professor at the University at Albany's School of Criminal Justice. In 1982, it was renamed the Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center (Hindelang Center) following his untimely death. Since 1983, the Center has been affiliated with the School of Criminal Justice at the University at Albany, State University of New York and is located on the downtown SUNY campus.
The primary mission of the Hindelang Center is to conduct quality research. Through this activity, the Center pursues a variety of objectives, including the development of policy recommendations in the field of criminal justice, the dissemination of research results through publication in scholarly journals, sponsorship of brown bag lunches and other colloquia, and the provision of opportunities for graduate students to learn research skills and to develop dissertation topics. Over the past 30 years, the Hindelang Center has employed more than 100 Graduate Research Assistants.
Since its inception, the Center has been engaged in many projects on a variety of criminal justice topics. Funding comes from the State and Federal level as well as from the University. Federal funding has come from many agencies, including the National Institute of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute on Drug Abuse, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sponsoring New York State agencies have included the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, State Police, Department of Correctional Services, and Division of Criminal Justice Services.
