Overview of Activites on Environmental Sustainability at the University at Albany

Institutional framework:

Task Force on Environmental Sustainability

Director of Environmental Sustainability who reports to VP of Finance and Business

Energy Manager who reports to Associate VP of Facilities

Sustainability Coordinators Program (employees)

Sustainability Council Program (students)

UAlbany Students for Sustainability

Associations with: Campus branch of NYPIRG, Campus Greens, Student Association, Greeks, Hillel as well as various campus departments 

Areas of Focus:

Built Environment (work with Facilities, Campus Planning, AECM): green building, sustainable design, energy reduction 

Curriculum Development (work with Provost, Academic Affairs): review, enhance and initiate courses around sustainability, incorporate element of sustainability into existing courses 

Energy (work with Energy manager and Physical Plant): energy efficiency, renewable energy, student energy campaign, academic energy campaign, office energy saving strategies and green IT 

Green Commerce (work with Purchasing, UAS and Chartwells): green purchasing, sustainable dining choices, elimination of trays in dining halls 

Public Relations and Outreach (work with Media and Community Engagement): communicate efforts on environmental sustainability, develop outreach programs with the community 

Environmental Landscape (work with Campus Planning and Ground): advise, review landscape design, create database on ecological resources on campus, sustainable grounds management 

Solid and Hazardous Waste (work with Grounds and Environmental Health and Safety):  reduction and monitoring of hazardous waste, reduction of waste generated on campus including alternative use of food waste (ie; composting, waste to energy), reduction of paper use (double sided printing and copying, publications printed on 100% recycled paper), compostable/biodegradable take out dishware, biodegradable bags, reusable/refillable mugs, canvas bags, movement towards air dryers (unheated( and 100& post consumer paper towels and toilet tissue.

Recycling: increasing our infrastructure, recycling at catered events.  We recycle: mixed paper, comingled plastic, glass, aluminum,, batteries, electronics, metal, tires, ballasts, toners, ink jets, lighting

Reuse: pallets, picked up by company for reuse or chipping for wood shavings 

Transportation (work with Parking and Mass Transit): encourage use of alternative forms of mass transit including: UAlbany shuttle, CDTA lines, car pooling (use IPool2 service through CDTC), awareness of other commuter lines and park and ride locations, ride sharing program, car sharing program.  Biking – adequate bike racks, facilities and storage, bike sharing.  Construction of Purple Path, Golden Grid. Use of telecommuting, teleconferencing and conference calls.
