Selected Energy Conservation/Sustainability Practices and Initiatives

Operational Practices
Ongoing:
  • Facilities uses cleaning products that are environmentally-friendly
  • Adhere purchase of vehicles to State and Federal Alternative Fueled Vehiclestruck (27K) mandates
  • Storm water management for all facility repairs and upgrades
New:
  • Expand visibility and number of recycling stations - add 20 new stations on the Podium: 10 insidebin_in (24K), 10 outsidebin_out (16K)
  • Solar powered crosswalkcrossing (31K) lights at Empire Commons crossing
  • Increase use of biodiesel fuel to at least 10% of total motor fuel usage in 2008
Facility Improvements
Construction/Installation in 2008:
  • Installation of occupancy sensorslight (3K) for lighting in the Residence Halls laundry rooms
  • LC-18 installation of CO2 monitoring, which measures room occupancy and adjusts air handlers for energy savings
  • Install controls and variable speed drive in PAC for air handlers to save energy
  • New benchesbench (43K) on Indian and State quads made from recycled plastic
  • New Entry Plaza fountain is designed to use UV purification, not chemicals
  • Husted renovation is seeking silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) status
  • The new Purple Path will encourage walking and bicycling as modes of transportation on campus
  • Install prototype window replacements on selected floors on Indian Tower
  • Purchase of renewal energy credits as 10% of our annual electric use
In the Planning and Design Phase:
  • Complete overhaul of central plant boilers, chillers, and mechanical systems will begin in 2008. Project will convert boilers to cleaner fuels, dramatically curtail emissions, and increase energy efficiency
  • Variable speed drives to be installed on one chiller in the Power Plant to save energy
  • Initiate feasibility study to install a photo voltaic array project on campus
  • Initiate feasibility study of a Combined Heat and Power project on campus
  • Lighting Master Plan study near completion, creating new efficiency standards and replacement schedule for campus
  • Seek phased replacement of windows, campus-wide
