Entry/Circle Site Work
October 2012
Alert Notification:
Entry/Circle Site Work | Work Area Map
Background
This project will encompass the site area immediately east of State Quad (residential facility), and areas located to the east and west of Collins Circle. These areas were first constructed more than forty years ago. No substantial upgrades or improvements have been made since these areas were first put into service.
The area immediately east of State Quad was originally designed as a grassy area, which soon became a pathway for pedestrians from the adjacent parking lots toward the academic podium or State Quad. Due to the continued growth of the University, this area will become a parking lot. During the construction of this parking lot the University will replace and upgrade critical underground utility systems; provide access for the disabled, and will improve pedestrian circulation.
The areas located to the east and west of Collins Circle were originally designed as treed buffers to reinforce the dramatic architectural element of Collins Circle with its contrast to a primarily rectilinear design presence of the Academic Podium and Dormitory Quads. Due to the continued academic growth of the University, a New School of Business Building will be constructed at the current visitor’s parking lot located on Collins Circle. Two new Visitor’s parking lots will be constructed to the east and west of Collins Circle. New landscaping will incorporate a radial treed installation to reinforce the original design intent and mask parking from residence halls. The new visitor’s parking lots will have more user-friendly approaches, handicapped accessibility, and landscaping in keeping with the original campus design.
Scope of Project
Sanitary/Storm Water:
Work includes the replacement of existing sanitary sewer and storm sewer drainage piping and structures. The work will also require the installation of a subsurface storm water detention structure for compliance with current DEC regulations.
Electrical / Lighting:
Work will include the removal of deteriorated light poles and the installation of new electrical feeds, light poles/bases and lighting. The new lighting will be placed in a manner that will provide a more even and uniform lighting level consistent with campus safety standards and the University’s lighting master plan.
Paved Surfaces / Curbing:
Work will include the installation of new asphalt parking surfaces, concrete sidewalks, and granite curbing.
Bus Shelter:
The existing Bus Shelter, located at the western side of Collins Circle will be temporarily relocated to the eastern side of Collins Circle. This relocation is needed to allow for the construction of a new Bus Shelter which will be located at the western side of Collins Circle. The new Bus Shelter will not be in operation until completion of the New School of Business Building.
Irrigation:
Work will include the installation of a new site irrigation system with piping consistent with the University’s site utilities study and campus sustainability goals. The irrigation source is Indian Pond.
Trees:
The site utility work will necessitate the removal of trees as will the remediation plan to address diseased and dying tree species on campus. In total, the project will remove approximately 340 diseased/dying trees (as analyzed in the University’s Landscape Master Plan) from the site. The trees will be shredded for mulch. As part of this project, the University will replace the trees with over 520 trees. The new landscaping will have a more sustainable and bio-diverse planting plan.
