Campus wide Energy Audits (see notable campus projects)
The University has partnered with New York Power Authority (NYPA) to perform detailed energy audits on Uptown and Downtown campuses to identify, evaluate and develop a comprehensive package of energy efficiency measures.
Comprehensive Energy Efficiency Upgrades (see notable campus projects)
Based on the results of the energy audits, upgrades to lighting, mechanical and controls systems will be implemented at both the Uptown and Downtown campus. The project will result in significant (5-15%) reduction in annual utility bills.
Feasibility Study for Photovoltaic System (see notable campus projects)
The feasibility of installing a photovoltaic system on campus is being analyzed. System location and capacity will be determined based on cost/benefit analysis.
Energy Education Campaign
Materials are being developed to implement an energy education campaign to assist faculty and staff to reduce energy at workplace.
Web-Based Real-Time Electricity Use Monitoring
A web-based tool to access real-time electric usage by building is under development. Once online, the tool will allow anyone on campus to see how much electricity a particular building is using and compare with other buildings on campus.
Intersession Energy Savings Initiative
The University turned down heat and turned off lighting equipment during the 2008 Winter Intersession and saved over $250,000 in avoided utility costs.
Heating Temperature Setpoints
In accordance with the University's Space Temperature Setpoint Policy, the thermostats in buildings were adjusted to maintain 68F occupied and 55F unoccupied during heating season. This measure is estimated to save over $100,000 in heating bills per year.
Change-a-Light Campaign
As part of the 2008 Student Energy Challenge, over 1,300 compact fluorescent lamps were provided to students living on-campus in exchange for incandescent bulbs. This effort saved $10,000 per year.
