Dr. O'Connell currently serves as the Director of Leadership, Research and Development and also holds an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Administration & Policy Studies at the University at Albany. Dr. O'Connell joined the department after 25 years of experience in K-12 public education. He served in both urban and suburban settings as a science teacher, elementary and junior high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. Most recently Dr. O'Connell held the position of Administrator for Organizational Performance with the Questar III Board of Cooperative Educational Services. In addition, Dr. O'Connell has consulted in the U.S. and in West Africa on a variety of topics related to the operation of public schools. His research interests focus on the nature of the school superintendency, school board – superintendent relations and the issues associated with the preparation of school administrators. In particular, Dr. O'Connell recent work has examined the processes of recruiting and selecting school administrators.
