The Department
Purposes & Goals
A high-level academic and professional unit in the School of Education, EAPS embodies a clear commitment to improving school management, educational leadership, and policy analysis. Toward this goal, EAPS is unique in its dynamic integration of high-quality theoretical and applied research with rigorous instructional programs and field-based service activities. These efforts have resulted in EAPS achieving regional, national, and international prominence in the fields of educational leadership and policy analysis, as well as the social sciences.
Faculty
EAPS faculty encompass diverse knowledge and skills resulting from their collective expertise in social science and humanities disciplines - including economics, philosophy, political science, and sociology - and administration or leadership - including school finance, organizational management, and law. The Department is particularly strong in comparative education policy, with an emphasis on state and national reforms related to standards, evaluation, and political economy. All faculty members have an earned doctorate and create for EAPS a valuable mix of academic and practical experience in K-12 school leadership, higher education, and policy analysis.
Degree Programs
Students in EAPS' three degree programs receive an integrated mix of theory, research and practical experience that prepares them for success in a wide variety of positions as educational leaders. The degree programs lead to a master's degree, to a Certificate of Advanced Study, or to a doctorate. While offering several specializations (K-12 administration, higher education, or policy analysis and comparative studies) EAPS integrates the concentrations by incorporating overarching concepts from support disciplines such that students all share a common language and understanding of key concepts. Students are encouraged to interact with peers in other concentrations to provide a broader network of educational leaders facing common challenges.
