EAPS instructional programs provide students with a solid foundation in the theory and practice of educational leadership and critical analytical skills. The department's core and elective courses are designed to encourage development of critical thinking and reasoning skills through stimulating scholarly exploration of problems and issues related to educational management and policy. The goal is to prepare students for leadership positions in any type of educational organization as individuals who can frame insightful questions, read and understand sophisticated educational research, draw pertinent ramifications, and communicate effectively.
Area Concentrations
Students in any of the three EAPS degree programs can pursue one of three loosely structured concentrations, which focus on different levels or aspects of education. While all students take the same core courses, the concentrations allow students to explore in more depth issues related to specific aspects of educational leadership. In consultation with their advisor, students should select a concentration that reflects their career goals and interests.
Courses in "School Administration" prepare students for administrative positions in elementary and secondary schools or districts, as well as for faculty positions in educational administration in universities. The "Higher Education" concentration includes courses that prepare students for administrative and faculty positions in colleges and universities of all types. In addition, this concentration is appropriate for students who are interested in staff or administration positions in adult and continuing education programs in other educational, business, industrial, and labor organizations. The concentration "Educational Policy Analysis" focuses on approaches to educational policy formation and implementation that originate in the social sciences and philosophy. It is designed to prepare students for leadership and administrative positions in state, national and international organizations.
