Research activities of the Center include:

• Natural disasters, terrorism, and other extreme events, including decision making, learning from disaster experience, public and private sector crisis management, and the effect of extreme events on state and local government, the judicial branch, and other institutions.
  
• Use of expertise, information, science, and technology in the policy process and in decision making (scientists' judgments, medical decision making, production and use of weather forecasts).
  
• Group work (decision conferences, group modeling, negotiation and bargaining).
• Policy modeling (system dynamics, economic modeling).
• Policy analysis (e.g., education finance and policy, environmental policy, welfare policy).
• Public program evaluation (elderly nutrition, social services, criminal justice)
