Understanding Barriers to Obtaining Food Stamps
This study was a collaborative effort between CHSR researchers and the Nutrition Consortium of New York State: a statewide, private, nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating hunger for New York residents. Through its Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP), the Nutrition Consortium works to expand participation in the FSP and channels state funding for the FSP outreach efforts to local community-based organizations throughout New York. The Nutrition Consortium received funding from the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation to analyze an existing dataset; the Nutrition Consortium reached out to the CHSR for assistance with this project.
Staff at Nutrition Consortium and CHSR researchers worked together to develop a plan for analyzing the data from their quarterly reports and annual reports compiled by CBOs on paper. Data from the quarterly reports for 2004 through 2008 were entered into SPSS for analysis for quantitative analysis. A qualitative analysis was conducted on a sample of the annual reports.
