New Freshman Academic Advisement

Language Placement Information

Should I take a foreign language class?

Foreign language competency is a General Education requirement. The General Education foreign language requirement is noted as completed for students who earned a grade of 85 or better on the NYS Regents exam or who have earned AP credit in a foreign language. Students who earned below 85 or who did not take a foreign language in high school must complete the equivalent of Elementary level 2 to complete the General education requirement.  Students who took foreign language in high school but did not take a Regents exam should indicate this to their academic advisor for further instructions.

If you are interested in continuing a language from high school we encourage you to use the chart below to determine which language class best suits your abilities.
