Legal Aid Society of Northeastern NY

 

Legal Aid is a law firm that specializes in the civil legal problems of poor people. The Society is looking for a volunteer to serve as a reader/assistant to a visually impaired attorney. The attorney practices in Rensselaer County Family Court, serving victims of domestic violence. The hours are subject to discussion and agreement with the attorney while fulfilling community service requirements. It is a very client-oriented opportunity, which includes observing and assisting in court.

Preservation League of New York State

A library science/resource management volunteer is needed to catalog and organize the architectural resources and archival materials in the library. The Preservation League is a statewide, nonprofit, membership organization that works through technical assistance, legal services, advocacy efforts and grant programs to promote and protect the historic architecture and landscapes of NYS.

Center for Law and Justice, Inc.

The Center monitors criminal justice and civil rights issues that directly affect primarily poor people, people of color and their communities. It is the mission of the Center to promote empowerment of the affected juvenile and criminal justice systems. Programs include criminal justice advocacy, community education and crime prevention. Students assist with the legal information and referral program, with initial screening of clients, follow-up contacts, case management services, project-related activities, data base entry and telephone communications. Students may also assist with the crime prevention program by doing community outreach, working directly with clients and scheduling programs and activities.

Council of Community Services

Juniors or seniors needed for community research, organization and administration for local social and statewide non-profit issues. Research communications and computer skills desirable. Specific duties will include updating specialized databases, legislative research, assisting in the drafting of policy statements; legal research and updating the agency's web site. The student(s) will learn about the basic structure of

NY's 50,000 non-profit organization and some of the most important issue facing them. A two-semester commitment is preferred. Own transportation helpful. .

Capital  District Women's Bar Association (CDWBA) Legal Project, Inc.

Students interested in law, women's studies, psychology, social work and/or business might find this internship experience with the Legal Project both rewarding and educational. Many opportunities exist to participate in this woman-focused, not-for-profit organization as it grows and develops including: telephone intake of clients, data collection and analysis, program expansion, grant writing, marketing, public relations, general coordination and the development of a mechanism for attorney tracking of pro bono services. The organization offers several programs, each unique to the Capital District: "Domestic Violence Legal Connection," "Legal Assistance Program," "Legal Seminars," and "Professional Training Series."

Assisting in personnel administration assignments; such as setting up training programs, working with Civil Service Law, employment law, State Comptrollers' Office regulations, and other special studies. May gain knowledge of certain computer software packages such as, WordPerfect for Windows, ACCESS andQuattroPro. May be involved with different administrative bureaus; e.g., Budget and Fiscal Management, Legal Technology, and Administrative Services to gain an overall view of a business operation. Excellent opportunity for students interested in public administration or personnel areas.

NYS Crime Victims Board Web Site

The NY Civil Liberties Union, the state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, is a private, non-profit organization that seeks to preserve and extend constitutional rights and privileges found mainly in the Bill of Rights. It does so through advocacy, both in and out of court public education and lobbying.

Students who volunteer with the Capital Region Chapter of the NYCLU are primarily involved in the Chapter's intake function, reviewing requests for legal assistance in a myriad of matters. The student makes referrals, does research and occasionally engages in advocacy on an individual's behalf. From time to time, special projects include assistance with Chapter publications, fundraising events, speaker's forums or court cases.

An independent community-based organization that advocates, develops, educates and provides community justice, conflict resolution and supportive family services to promote fairness and equality within Schenectady County. Volunteer students will work in one of three departments performing daily tasks including attending court proceedings, performing client intakes, reporting and monitoring client progress and communications by phone and mail.
