Legal Aid is a law firm that specializes in
the civil legal problems of poor people. The
Society is looking for a volunteer to serve
as a reader/assistant to a visually impaired
attorney. The attorney practices in
Rensselaer County Family Court, serving
victims of domestic violence. The hours are
subject to discussion and agreement with the
attorney while fulfilling community service
requirements. It is a very client-oriented
opportunity, which includes observing and
assisting in court.

the architectural resources and archival
materials in the library. The Preservation
League is a statewide, nonprofit, membership
organization that works through technical

The
Center monitors criminal justice and civil
rights issues that directly affect primarily
poor people, people of color and their
communities. It is the mission of the Center
to promote empowerment of the affected
juvenile and criminal justice systems.
Programs include criminal justice advocacy,
community education and crime prevention.
Students assist with the legal information
and referral program, with initial screening
of clients, follow-up contacts, case
management services, project-related
activities, data base entry and telephone
communications. Students may also assist
with the crime prevention program by doing
community outreach, working directly with
clients and scheduling programs and
activities.

the Legal Project both rewarding and
educational. Many opportunities exist to
participate in this woman-focused,
not-for-profit organization as it grows and
develops including: telephone intake of
clients, data collection and analysis,
program expansion, grant writing, marketing,
public relations, general coordination and
the development of a mechanism for attorney
tracking of pro bono services. The
organization offers several programs, each
unique to the Capital District: "Domestic
Violence Legal Connection," "Legal
Assistance Program," "Legal Seminars," and
"Professional Training Series."

The
NY Civil Liberties Union, the state
affiliate of the American Civil Liberties
Union, is a private, non-profit organization
that seeks to preserve and extend
constitutional rights and privileges found
mainly in the Bill of Rights. It does so
through advocacy, both in and out of court
public education and lobbying.
Students who volunteer with the Capital
Region Chapter of the NYCLU are primarily
involved in the Chapter's intake function,
reviewing requests for legal assistance in a
myriad of matters. The student makes
referrals, does research and occasionally
engages in advocacy on an individual's
behalf. From time to time, special projects
include assistance with Chapter
publications, fundraising events, speaker's
forums or court cases.
