Thinking of a career in medicine or dentistry?

Approximately 50 students from the University apply annually for admission to medical, osteopathic, dental, optometry, podiatry, chiropractic, and veterinary schools. There is little variation in the basic requirements for admission to the professional schools. The majority of these schools require the general biology sequence, and one full year of study in chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, mathematics, and English. Many health profession schools now strongly recommend or require that students complete humanities and/or social science courses and a course in genetics, and a course in biochemistry as well. There is no one special major for pre-professional health careers students, and the requirements for admission can be met through a variety of majors available at the University.

Students interested in pre-health careers often participate in the Charles Drew Science Club, the Biology Club, and the Five Quad Ambulance Service.

The University's Pre-Health Advisory Committee interviews pre-health students pursuing admission to medical or dental institutions during the spring semester prior to application and prepares an official evaluation for each candidate. Currently this committee consists of four faculty members and four professional staff members.

Resource materials, admission statistics, admission test applications, volunteer information and procedural information are available for University students in the Advisement Services Center.

If you are interested in medicine or dentistry, you should inform your advisor as soon as possible so the two of you can discuss the pre-health curriculum. Sophomores should also schedule an appointment to meet with the pre-health advisor. The pre-health advisor will answer questions you have about preparing for a career in the health field and help get you started on the right track. The Pre-Health Advisor contacts all pre-health students by email listserv concerning important meetings, upcoming events, and special guest speakers. Therefore, it is imperative that you sign up for the pre-health listserv.
