Choosing a Major |
1. "What's your major?" Sound familiar? Some days it feels like everyone around you knows exactly what they want to do and they think you should know too! The fact is that most students change their minds and their majors several times during their college career. Those other students are just as unsure as you!

2. Here are some things to think about. To begin with, try to separate the idea that major = career. It doesn't. The best plan is to major in a subject area that interests you. You will perform best in the subjects that grab your interest.. Do you find yourself spending more time reading a particular subject? Do you talk about it with your friends and classmates? Does the homework for a particular class motivate you to learn more? If any of these are true, you are on your way to the right major for you. If you haven't found that subject yet, keep looking! You are bound to find your niche with all the choices available to you.

3. How can I get a job with a major in ...? Often students will say "I love my ........ classes, but that subject won't get me a job!" We don't agree. If a particular subject challenges you to think critically, write, research and express yourself effectively to others, you are well on your way to a successful career in thousands of different areas. The basic skills you acquire in any of the majors at Albany will be beneficial in your future endeavors. You should use the faculty and University resources like the Career Development Center to help guide your career search. Internships, directed research projects, community service and independent study are all great ways to help you figure out what you want to do after you graduate. So take a step back and take a deep breath. The next time a person asks about your major, tell them you're enjoying your exploration!
