Actuarial and
Mathematical Science Major
http://math.albany.edu/
Welcome to
the Department of Mathematics and
Statistics at the University at Albany.
Actuaries are
professionals who manage risk and
determine premiums for insurance
companies, pension plans, and other
financial institutions, and government
and business. To attain professional
standing as an actuary requires
successful completion of a series of
examinations offered jointly by the
Society of Actuaries and the Casualty
Actuarial Society. This major offers
coursework related to the preliminary
actuarial exams.
As a transfer
student it is important for you to also
use your
Degree Audit Report (DARS) to
determine what you’ve already completed
and what is left for you to finish at
Albany. As you do this, please consider
the following information that we have
found to be important to transfer
students:
-
Actuarial and
Mathematical Sciences is a combined
major and minor sequence. No separate
minor is required; however, the
Economics minor is automatically
fulfilled and may be declared.
-
An
Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences
major may be declared after you earn a
grade of C or higher AMat 113, 119, or
214 (calculus II and multi-variable
calculus). Transfer credits may be
used to satisfy this requirement.
Actuarial majors
are advised to follow the sequence of
major courses outlined on the
Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences
MAP. Note your starting
point based on the math classes you
have previously completed.The mathematics
courses needed for the actuarial major
are 112, 113, 214, 220, 301, 362, 363,
403, 464, 465, and 467. It is important
to note that 465 and 467 are offered in
the fall semester and 403 and 464 are
offered in the spring semester. In
planning the upper level courses, note
that 301 is a prerequisite for 403 and
that 362 is a prerequisite for 363,
which in turn is a prerequisite for 465.
For more details on the prerequisites
for courses, check the
Undergraduate Bulletin.
Take care to
note that you will also have Economics,
Computer Science, Accounting and Finance
requirements to satisfy. The sequence
of five Economics courses suggests that
students pace themselves by taking one
per semester.
If you have
reached the upper level Math coursework,
you may choose to satisfy the upper
level writing requirement by selecting a
300+ math class listed with a “Z”
suffix. Several Math “Z” classes are
offered each semester.
