Web Assignment 1

RISP 523, Spring 2006
Due 4/17/2006

For this assignment, you are to create a series of web pages (a web site) that explains the technology your developed for your Powerpoint assignment to an audience unfamiliar with the topic. You should also be prepared to present a 3 minute overview of this website and its content to the class on the due date for this project, in the electronic classroom during the first half of class.

In particular, you are to create a web site (series of web pages) that:

·        Describes the technology in detail, using links to web-related content as appropriate

·        Clearly relates the technology to key information policy issues such as information security (reliability, accuracy, availability, etc), again, using links to web-related content.

·        Presents your opinion and thoughts on the topic.

I anticipate the need for between 10-12 linked pages for this site.  Minimally, you will need pages that incorporates:

·        An Index Page; (must be named index.html for the University at Albany) - this should have your name, the course, and the topic.

·        Graphic images and diagrams

·        a reference list with 5 sources as outlined in the Powerpoint assignment. You are to hyperlink all web-based references back to their original sources online.

You should complete this assignment using the content you developed as part of the Powerpoint assignment Be sure to incorporate instructor comments feedback to you from the Powerpoint assignment. You will place the pages on in a University at Albany account.  Visit https://www.albany.edu/its/new_students/accounts_email.html if you have questions about your account. Please follow the steps at https://www.albany.edu/its/quickstarts/qs-webunix.html to setup your Albany website. Also refer to https://www.albany.edu/its/quickstarts/qs-ftp.html to find the FTP address (itsunix.albany.edu). If you are new to using Unix, please check out https://www.albany.edu/its/faq_guides/unix.html.

In order to setup your website, you must perform a few steps. First, you must Telnet into itsunix.albany.edu. Once logged into the SUNY Albany Unix system, you must create the web directory which will be used to store your files. Type "startweb" at the command prompt (from your home directory). This script creates a public_html subdirectory where your web pages will be stored. (You need only to run this command once). To allow users on the Internet to view uploaded web pages, you must type "setweb" at the command prompt. The setweb command descends the public_html directory and sets the appropriate file permissions on the public_html directory and any subdirectories you may have created, so that your web pages will be viewable. You also only need to run "setweb" once, unless you create subdirectories.

You should use HTMLKit or Macromedia Dreamweaver for this assignment. You may also use another web development tool tool may already be familiar with, but you must consult the instructor for approval. Refer to the user manual for more information on its use HTMLKit. Dreamweaver will be covered in class. Both are installed on the computers in the lab. HTMLKit is a free web editing program that you can use on your own personal PC too to edit and post your files. Setup HTMLKit to use itsunix.albany.edu as the FTP address, and public_html as the initial directory to load files to. (Click to enlarge picture):

Please include your name and the last updated date on each page.  Include a link to the index page on every page as well. Please also refer to this sample uncompleted website to help develop your own site, which can be downloaded in zip format from here.
