The program prepares individuals for careers in communication professions within a variety of contexts: political, organizational, interpersonal, intercultural, technology, and health. Additionally, it provides opportunities for problem solving and skill development within professional work environments, as well as advanced research experiences guided by faculty mentors. The program is designed to prepare qualified students for college and university teaching and for careers in communication research. The program emphasizes communication theory, research methods, and the application of knowledge in the field to identify, analyze and propose solutions for communication problems. The program requires at least three academic years of full-time course work, beyond the baccalaureate, in addition to the dissertation.
The Certificate program is 12 credits and fully online, with two possible concentrations in Strategic Communication or Organizational Communication. The program offers a blend of theoretical and applied study to prepare participants for the challenges of an ever-changing global society, and to function effectively as communication leaders. The certificate is fully transferrable into the Master of Arts program in Communication.
The Dual Master's Degree Program in Communication (M.A.) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL – M.S.) serves the interests of students who want to teach English as a second or foreign language, and who want to enrich the foundation they have for teaching a foreign language by studying communication processes as well. The program also serves the interests of students in the field of interpersonal and intercultural communication who are interested in getting overseas experience, and while there support themselves by teaching English as a Foreign Language, and to international students in U.S. institutions.
