Culinary Institute of America Luncheon Set
The Capital Region Chapter of the Alumni Association will host the annual Culinary Institute of America luncheon Nov. 10. Feast on an incredible meal at the Escoffier Restaurant. Visiting Artist Lecture With Brian Tolle '86
Alumni are invited to attend a lecture/presentation by Brain Tolle ’86 Oct. 31 at 4:30 p.m. in the Boor Sculpture Studio’s All Purpose Room. Tolle's work reflects his fascination with American history and the seamless ribbon that is America's timeline. He is particularly interested in the "gray areas" between past and present. The program is funded by the University at Albany Alumni Association and the Art Department.

UAlbany Awards 15 Inaugural Scholarships for Fall 2006
Fifteen UAlbany students are the newest recipients of awards from the Kermit L. Hall and Phyllis A. Hall Inaugural Scholarship Fund, bringing the total number of scholars to 19. Renamed on Sept. 18 to honor the late University president and his wife, the endowment provides scholarship support through recognition of deserving undergraduates. Full story >>

UAlbany Goes Green
UAlbany is going green and proud of it! President Kermit Hall created a Task Force on Environmental Sustainability in February 2006. Its goal: “… to be a leader in environmental sustainability … a model for other colleges and universities as well as a model for our own students and the community in everyday life.” The task force will recommend ways to raise awareness University-wide, promote a culture that supports sustainability, and improve policies and practices long term. New York Rises to Third in U.S. in Number of Nanotech-Related Companies
New York State ranks third in the nation — up from fifth a year ago — in the number of micro- and nanotech-related companies, according to a recent report in Small Times, the world’s leading trade publication covering the nanotechnology and microtechnology industries. In its assessment, Small Times said, “The Albany area is pushing nanoeconomic development aggressively. Look for the upstate region to evolve into a denser cluster as startups and service providers follow the recently announced AMD chip fab into the region.” Full story >>

Alumni Achiever Campaign Highlights UAlbany as Great Starting Point
The images and career stories of 12 UAlbany alumni who exemplify the ideal of "Reaching Higher, Achieving More" now resonate from 7-foot-high posters in the Lecture Center area and large tripod screens in University Hall. They represent the first installment of a campaign that celebrates the successful, often remarkable career paths of UAlbany alumni in all walks of life. Full story >>

U.S.-African Partnership for Building Stronger Communities Celebrates Sixth Anniversary
This summer, students and faculty who were part of the U.S.-African Partnership for Building Stronger Communities Project experienced culture, policy and social welfare in South Africa and Swaziland. The project’s mission is to promote stronger U.S.-African relationships by engaging, educating and preparing students, faculty and community-based practitioners to function in a global society. The Summer Study Tours, a key component of the project, have introduced more than 78 participants to hands-on learning about culture, history, leadership and international policies.

McCarthy Shares Insights
Garry McCarthy ’81, who was recently hired as police director for the City of Newark, N.J., returned to campus in September to share his experiences with UAlbany students, faculty and staff from the School of Criminal Justice. McCarthy, who began as a beat officer in The Bronx in the 1980s, made a name for himself as a crime strategist with the NYPD. He helped establish Compstat, the data collection program for crime statistics that contributed to a significant drop in violent crime in New York City in the last seven years.

Researchers Explore the Formation of Atmospheric Nanoparticles
A research team led by UAlbany’s Fangqun Yu has been awarded a $500,000 grant by the National Science Foundation. Yu’s team is employing a novel approach to study the formation of nanometer-size particles in the atmosphere, which affect the quality of life in many ways. In polluted urban environments, they lead to adverse health effects and deteriorate visibility. In regional and global scales, atmospheric particles influence the Earth's climate and change the hydrological cycle. Full story >>

At the end of October, the School of Education is co-sponsoring the International Forum on Teacher Education at the East China Normal University in Shanghai, where Dean Susan Philips will deliver a keynote address. The forum is a result of recent efforts to expand collaborative opportunities between UAlbany and Chinese institutions of higher education. Full story >>

Business Fraternity Hosts Career Fair
The Zeta Psi chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, celebrating its 40th anniversary next semester, coordinated its 32nd annual fall Career Fair in September. The international coed professional business fraternity plans and executes the annual event, open to UAlbany students from all disciplines. This year, 72 companies participated, including Lockheed Martin, Deloitte and Touche, GlaxoSmithKline and the Peace Corp.

Lacrosse Schedule Announced
The Great Danes, who made their fifth consecutive appearance in the America East Conference championship final last year, will play five games against conference opponents. The non-league schedule features former national champions Syracuse and Johns Hopkins and last year’s NCAA runner-up Massachusetts. UAlbany starts its eighth season at the NCAA Division I level Feb. 24 against Johns Hopkins, the 2005 NCAA champion. Full story >>

Test Proctors Needed
The University is seeking volunteer test proctors for students needing special testing accommodations. Test proctors guarantee academic integrity and serve as readers and/or writers. Proctors are needed throughout the year, particularly during midterm and final examination periods. Alumni Loan Consolidation Program Can Help Graduates Save
The student loan grace period for most 2006 graduates will be ending soon. Graduates who consolidate their eligible student loans before their grace period expires are eligible to receive an additional interest rate discount of .60 percent, providing considerable savings over the life of the loan.
