Life Sciences Building OpensCDC Awards School of Public Health $5 Million to Fund Center for Public Health Preparedness
UAlbany's School of Public Health has been awarded $5 million in funding by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to continue serving as a national Center for Public Health Preparedness (CPHP). The CPHP works to improve the capacity of the public health workforce to respond to current and emerging public health threats with a focus on bioterrorism and infectious disease outbreaks. Center for Jewish Studies Honors Philanthropist Michael Steinhardt
UAlbany awarded philanthropist Michael Steinhardt the Medallion of the University, the institution's highest honor, at the 2004 Center for Jewish Studies celebration Sept. 22. The award recognizes Steinhardt's distinguished leadership in the Jewish community, extraordinary commitment to perpetuating Jewish life and innovative approaches to education. Full Story >>
Study Shows Voice Attractiveness Predicts Sexual Behavior
UAlbany researchers have found a significant association between the perceived attractiveness of a person's voice and the sexual activity of the speaker. "When the phone rings," said psychologist Gordon Gallup Jr., "even though you may not know the person at the other end of the line, as soon as they speak you usually know whether you are talking to a male or female, and a child or adult. ... Our research shows that voice might be a medium that also conveys subtle information about sexual behavior and body configuration. Full Story >>

New Course Tackles Emergencies in Schools
The School of Education and the Center for Public Health Preparedness in the School of Public Health have collaborated to create “Emergency Preparedness in Schools: Prevention, Response, and Recovery,” a course to train educators and public health professionals to manage disasters in schools. The course will be offered for the first time in spring 2005 as an online class through the SUNY Learning Network. Full Story >>
Social Welfare Constituent Group Celebrates 6th Anniversary
The School of Social Welfare Alumni Constituent Group is committed to providing professional development opportunities for alumni. Its most recent offering, cosponsored with the School of Social Welfare, is an Oct.16 workshop on Solution Focused Therapy. Athletic Hall of Fame Welcomes New Members
Four former athletes will be inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame October 15. The new inductees include Xiomara Davila Diaz '99, track & field; Peter Pedro '90, football; Kimberly Toone '96, being honored posthumously for her exploits in track & field; and William Vanos '94, a standout in cross country and track & field.

ADVICE FOR FRESHMEN :
In the last issue, we asked you to tell us what advice you would give to incoming freshmen. Thanks to all the alumni who wrote back to share their thoughts with us. Below are a few of our favorite responses.
1) Set your goals early.
2) Take advantage of the resources available at UAlbany for academic and recreation.
3) Be part of at least one Student Association-sponsored club.
4) Don’t look back on mistakes, remedy them.
5) Learn the campus – learn the city – both are amazing if you make it yours.

… go to as many events, lectures, concerts and social functions as possible. Make a concerted effort to introduce yourself to as many people as possible at these events. You never know who will end up in your dorm or in a class one day. Everyone is in the same boat as you. Some of the friends I met the first few weeks of my first year, are still my friends 15 years later.
Also important as a Freshman is to find one professor that can be a mentor to you. Introduce yourself early on. This professor can help you with not only the class at hand but general issues with the school and eventually, they will know you well enough to be able to write a very personal recommendation for you if you ever need one for a job.

My advice is not to get wrapped up in obtaining a high GPA. There is so much to the College experience. Go make friends, take a variety of classes and most of all enjoy the process.
