John R. Ryan Named UAlbany Interim President
The State University of New York Board of Trustees unanimously voted Feb.
24 to name SUNY Maritime College President, Vice Adm. John R. Ryan, USN
(Ret.), as interim president of the University at Albany. "Working
with the students, faculty and staff at the campus will be a great pleasure,
and I am looking forward to the challenges that come with leading a large,
dynamic institution such as the University at Albany." Ryan will
continue his presidency of Maritime College while serving as interim president
at UAlbany. Ryan will not be a candidate for the position of permanent
president at UAlbany. Details.

Celebrates The Writing Semester As part of its celebration
of the 20th anniversary of the NYS Writers Institute, UAlbany is showcasing
the best of the literary arts during The Writing Semester. Pulitzer
Prize winners Ellen Goodman, Dave Barry and a host of nationally known
poets, authors, screenwriters, playwrights and journalists will be on
campus to lecture, read, perform and participate in seminars and panel
discussions. Details.
New
State Author and Poet Named Russell Banks is New York's new State
Author and Billy Collins the new State Poet, the New York State Writers
Institute announced Feb. 12. Banks, novelist, short story writer, and
screenwriter, will receive the New York State Edith Wharton Citation of
Merit for fiction writers; and Billy Collins, will receive the New York
State Walt Whitman Citation of Merit for poets. Details.
Giants
Will Train at UAlbany Through 2006 The New York Giants and UAlbany
have signed a three-year contract that will allow the National Football
League team to continue to conduct its summer training camp on the UAlbany
campus through 2006. UAlbany has been the Giant’s training camp
site since 1996.
Campaign Update Since last month’s report, UAlbany’s
campaign total has increased from $277 million to $278 million. The University
continues to carry the message and mission of the BOLD.VISION. Campaign
to alumni around the country. A reception will be held in Washington D.C.
March 23. Another is scheduled for Boca Raton, Florida, March 25.
