Susan Herbst Announces Departure
Susan Herbst, UAlbany’s officer in charge, will be leaving the University in late October to become executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer for the University System of Georgia. Herbst originally came to the University as provost in 2005. Interim SUNY Chancellor John Clark will begin his consultation soon with the UAlbany campus, an initial step in the process of designating new leadership.

UAlbany Garners Record Number of Freshmen, Transfer Applications
Demand for admission into UAlbany is at an all-time high with freshman applications surpassing 20,200 for the Fall 2007 semester, representing an 8.3 percent increase over last year. This fall, 175 incoming freshmen were accepted into the interdisciplinary Honors College, which represents a 46 percent increase over last year. Details.

UAlbany Offers China Semester
The University campus embraces the Far East this fall during Gateways to China, a celebration of China's past and present cultures. The semester offers UAlbany and the wider community the chance to experience all things Chinese – including food, film, history, art, politics, theater and literature. The semester kicked off Sept. 5 with opening ceremonies and a visit by the Hon. Ambassador Liu Biwei, consulate-general in New York City. Details.

Building a Community Within a Community For Transfer Students
Enhancing the experiences of its growing population of transfer students is among UAlbany's top priorities. To that end, the University is debuting a new position this semester – transfer experience coordinator. Details.


SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

UAlbany Launches New Public Health Major
The University’s School of Public Health has launched a new undergraduate major in Public Health, designed to address the field's evolving needs by educating future leaders responsible for improving public health and eliminating health disparities. UAlbany's Public Health major will prepare students for advanced studies in the field and careers in related fields, including medicine, nursing, law and journalism. Details.

Cancer Center and St. Peter's Hospital Partner for Cancer Drug Research
The University’s Cancer Research Center (CRC) is collaborating with St. Peter's Hospital to research anti-prostate cancer therapies. Scott Tenenbaum, a molecular geneticist at the CRC, and Michael Perrotti, a urologic oncologist at St. Peter's Hospital Cancer Care Center, will investigate how effective the drug dutasteride, originally formulated as a treatment for benign prostate growth, works in men with prostate cancer. UAlbany received a $10,000 grant from the Dominic Ferraioli Foundation to help fund the one-year project. Details.

School of Social Welfare Honors Scholarship Awardees and Donors
The School of Social Welfare is sponsoring a celebratory luncheon Oct. 12, noon-2 p.m., to honor scholars and their donors. The event will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany across from UAlbany’s downtown campus.

Rockefeller College Takes Programs Under Its Wing
The Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy recently adopted three organizations: the Center for International Development, which has implemented more than $150 million in international development projects during its 21 years; the Training Strategies Group, with more than 100 staffers and annual contracts of $20 million; and a new multi-disciplinary homeland security research program. School of Business Faculty Grows
An unprecedented 10 new faculty members have joined the School of Business this fall. Five will teach business: management, marketing, finance and information technology management. The other five will join the Department of Accounting and Law, some of whom will assist in the new Forensic Accounting program.

SSW Receives Grant for Substance Abuse Treatment Research
School of Social Welfare Associate Professor Brenda Smith has received funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Substance Abuse Policy Research Program for a two-year study. The study will inform policies that can promote the implementation of evidence-based substance abuse treatments in community settings. Treatment practices with demonstrated efficacy under ideal conditions have proven difficult to implement in typical community settings.


ATHLETICS

Basketball Season Tickets Now On Sale
Season tickets starting at $100 are on sale now for the 2007-08 men’s and women’s home basketball games played at the SEFCU Arena. The women open the home portion of their schedule against Colgate Nov. 15, while the men tip off their home schedule two days later, Nov. 17, against Columbia. Athletic Hall of Fame to Induct Cornfield, Grever and Poynton
The all-time leader in many of UAlbany’s career goaltending records in lacrosse, one of the Great Danes all-time leaders in career tackles and UAlbany’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1999 highlight the 2007 UAlbany Athletic Hall of Fame Induction class. Alan Cornfield ’85 (men’s lacrosse), Mike Grever ’99 (football) and Kelly Poynton ’99 (softball) will be honored by the University Oct. 12, 2007. UAlbany Dedicates Practice Field in Honor of Former New York Giants’ Owners
UAlbany has dedicated the University's football practice field in honor of Wellington T. Mara and Preston Robert Tisch, the late co-owners of the National Football League’s New York Giants. Mara and Tisch were instrumental in making the University at Albany home to the Giants' summer training camp beginning in 1996. Details.

Career Counseling Available for Alumni

Test Prep Courses Half the Price of National Services
The UAlbany Alumni Association is pleased to offer LSAT, GRE and GMAT test preparation courses to alumni, students and guests for admission into law, graduate and business school. These courses are offered at half the price of other national test centers. Registration is now open for the fall semester. Test Proctors Needed
The University is seeking volunteer test proctors for students needing special testing accommodations. Test proctors guarantee academic integrity and serve as readers and/or writers. Proctors are needed throughout the year, particularly during midterm and final examination periods. Proctors volunteer for one- to four-hour blocks between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
