Program Leading to the Master of Science (M.S.) Degree

Applicants to the M.S. program are expected to hold a baccalaureate with a combined total of at least 42 credits in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. A minimum of 18 credits in one of these areas will be required, and at least 6 credits in each of the other areas.

Applicants are required to submit official scores of the Graduate Record Examination aptitude test and an advanced test in biology, chemistry, or physics.

A minimum of 36 graduate credits is required for the M.S. degree. Areas of specialization (tracks): Molecular Genetics (MG); Immunology and Infectious Disease (IID); Structural and Cell Biology (SCB); and Neuroscience (NEU).

Program of Study and Research - 36 Credits

  1. Required courses: 7 credits:
    Bms 601 Introduction to Biomedical Sciences (3 credits), Bms 590 Laboratory Rotations in Biomedical Sciences (1 credit), Bms 665 Journal Club (must be taken each semester - 1 or 0 credits - total of 2 credits) and Bms 670 Responsible Conduct of Scientific Research (1credit).

  2. Additional courses as approved by advisor or required by track, 15 credits minimum. These must include Bms 504a Biochemistry (4), Bms 500 Molecular and Cell Biology (4), and Bms 504b Biochemistry (3) or Bms 500b Molecular Biology and Genetics (3).

  3. Bms 699 Master's thesis research, 14 credits minimum.

  4. Satisfactory completion of a master's major field examination.

  5. Satisfactory oral seminar and defense based on approved master's thesis of laboratory research.
