Program Leading to the Master of Arts Degree in Classics
Classics offers a program leading to the Master of Arts degree with specializations in classical archaeology or Latin.
Admissions to the Specialization in Latin have been suspended.
Program Leading to the Master of Arts Degree
Specialization in Classical Archaeology (30 credits, minimum)
- Classical archaeology (16-24 credits). Courses as advised, including either one seminar or Cla 699 (thesis). Up to 8 credits in anthropology may be substituted for work in classical archaeology.
- Cla 501 (3), Clc 502(3).
- Supporting courses (0-8 credits). Appropriate courses in Greek, Latin, anthropology, or other academic fields with the consent of the advisor.
- Satisfactory completion of a comprehensive examination in classical archaeology.
- Modern foreign language requirement. A reading knowledge of French, German, or another modern foreign language is desired for entrance to the program and must be demonstrated before its completion. Some universities require a reading knowledge of Greek and Latin for the Ph.D. in classical archaeology. For further information, consult the departmental advisor.
Specialization in Latin (30 credits, minimum), General Sequence
- Latin (16-24 credits). Courses as advised, including either one seminar or Cll 699 (thesis).
- Clc 501(3), Clc 502(3).
- Supporting courses (0-8 credits). Courses in other literatures, in classical archaeology, or in other academic fields with the consent of the advisor.
- Satisfactory completion of a comprehensive examination in the history of Latin literature.
- Foreign language requirement. A reading knowledge of French, German, or another appropriate modern foreign language is desired for entrance to the program and must be demonstrated before its completion.
