Debra E. Neuls

Debra E. Neuls came to the University in 1981 as a stenographer in the Department of Sociology and was promoted to her present position as Secretary 1 in the history department in 1987. She works directly with the chair, assistant chair, and graduate and undergraduate directors on matters concerning admissions, advisement, faculty searches, personnel appointments, graduate assistantships and fellowships, departmental policies and procedures, and career networking for students.

Neuls also helps faculty and staff with computer questions and problems, supervises work-study students, and acts as a departmental liaison with other units of the University. She is known for taking the time to pay attention to detail. She participates in the department's after-hours functions, often assisting with planning and preparation, and serves as a recruiter for the department by taking prospective students on tour and linking them with people on campus who can assist with their applications. She also advises students on thesis presentations and degree submissions, and she assisted the Graduate Student Organization with the start-up of its journal.

Neuls designed a system-and-rating sheet to track applications and maintains files for major faculty searches in the department. She created a "pocket program" for the National Council on Public History 1997 Annual Meeting, held at the University, which attendees found to be indispensable.

She also designed, produced, and continues to update a number of publications, including the department's Graduate Programs and Policies Handbook and a series of in-house brochures used for the recruitment of students. The brochures are crucial to the department's recruitment efforts and greatly strengthen its image both internally and externally. Neuls created the "Career Networking for History Students" and updates it annually to assist the department's career mentoring program.
