Contact(s):  Catherine Herman (518) 956-8150

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 20, 2008) -- University at Albany professor Elise Andaya offers insight into the political changes in Cuba in the wake of Fidel Castro's resignation.

* Fidel Castro Exits -- After almost 50 years of rule, Cuba's 81-year-old, ailing president formally resigns, bringing to end one of the world's longest reigns in power. UAlbany professor Elise Andaya offers insight into social and political change in Cuba since the fall of the Soviet Union. She conducted 16 months of fieldwork in Havana, Cuba (2004-2005) on shifts in reproduction, gender ideologies, and kinship strategies since the devastating economic and ideological crisis precipitated by the fall of the socialist bloc. In addition to her research in reproductive health care clinics, she conducted in-depth interviews with over 40 women and their families to trace how three generations of Cuban women have experienced the long history of the revolution, and to understand the impact of the current social, political, and economic changes on the lives of individuals and their families.
