ALBANY, N.Y. (October 6, 2009) -- On Oct. 7 and 8, political science students at the University at Albany's Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy will welcome two former U.S. Congressmen, the Honorable John Glen Browder (D-AL,1989-1997) and the Honorable Steven T. Kuykendall (R-CA, 1999-2001), into their classrooms as part of the Congress to Campus program.

Founded by the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress (USAFMC) in 1976 as a means to improve students' understanding of American government and encourage careers in public service, the Congress to Campus program sends bipartisan pairs of former U.S. Congressmen -- one Democrat and one Republican -- to colleges and universities to share their real-life experiences as candidates and office holders in a representative democracy. Over two days, the former representatives conduct classes, hold forums, and meet informally with students and faculty.

"The Congress to Campus program provides our students with an exciting opportunity to engage our civic leaders in a direct and personal way.  The visit will allow our students to see firsthand how what they learn in the classroom applies to some of the most important public policy questions of the day, " said David Rousseau, chair of the Department of Political Science at Rockefeller College.

John Glen Browder is a former member of the United States House of Representatives from Alabama's 3rd Congressional District.  He was elected as a Democrat to the 101st Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative William F. Nichols, and reelected to the three succeeding Congresses.  Browder served on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Budget Committee.

Steven T. Kuykendall served in the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2001, representing California's 36th Congressional District. Kuykendall served on the Armed Services, the Science and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committees of the House.

In 1996, the John C. Stennis Center for Public Service Leadership partnered with the USAFMC to manage the Congress to Campus program.  Since that time, more than 170 visits have been planned to campuses throughout the United States.

The Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy provides educational preparation for academic and public service careers, to undertake research on significant public problems and issues, and to assist in the continuing professional development of government executives. Rockefeller College comprises the departments of Political Science and Public Administration and Policy, and has an enhanced interdisciplinary approach to its public policy mission.
